Columbia County Habitat is now in its 21st year, serving as builders, bankers and advocates for lower-income working families. An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, International, Inc., Habitat has built 16 homes – 13 in Hudson and 1 each in Valatie, Copake and Chatham. Habitat provides no-interest loans to income-eligible working families, who must contribute 300 hours of sweat equity on Habitat projects alongside volunteers who construct the homes.
Habitat Executive Director Brenda Adams notes that in 2013, “Volunteers contributed more than 9000 hours to build the Columbia Passive Townhouses on Columbia Street in Hudson, and to organize and operate our ReStore, which was expanded by 50%.“ All proceeds from the ReStore support Habitat construction programs.
Projects for 2014 include a build in Hudson and the launch of A Brush with Kindness, a program that uses the same new construction, no-interest loan model to help eligible homeowners make needed exterior repairs, such as weatherization, with the aid of Habitat volunteers.
