A tribute to the pioneering spirit of Sandy West, now 104, who hosted a weekend group of artists and writers led by Savannah photographer Jack Leigh (Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, cover image) at her family home on Ossabaw Island, Georgia, in winter 2001.
Ossabaw is a large, protected barrier island with a unique history of encouraging creative people, thanks to Sandy. Patricia and I were honored to be included and I dashed off this song for Sandy the morning we parted. She appears at the end of the video. It was truly inspiring to be in that unspoiled environment that she--and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter--did so much to save.
